Laycock Loses Quarter-Final At Point Optical Classic
Saskatoon's Steve Laycock lost in the quarter-finals Monday at the Saskatoon Point Optical Classic at the Nutana Curling Club. Laycock dropped a 5-4 decision to Mike McEwen of Winnipeg who eventually won the event Monday afternoon. Laycock takes home $3,500.
Laycock advanced from the "C" event beating former World Champion, Kevin Koe 7-2 in a "C" qualifying game Sunday night.
McEwen defeated Kevin Martin in an extra end 6-5 in the Championship Final winning $15,000 while Martin pocketed $10,000. Enroute to the final, McEwen also defeated Randy Ferbey 9-8 in the semi-final while Martin downed Steve Petryk, 7-4. Both Petryk and Ferbey won $7,500 each. The losers of the quarter-finals won $3500 and include Rob Fowler of Brandon, World Champion, Jeff Stoughton and Dave Murdoch of Scotland.
Fowler edged Martin, 4-3 while McEwen upended Stoughton 7-3 in the "A" qualifiers Saturday night. Advancing from the "B" event were Ferbey who beat Petryk 8-6 in one "B" qualifier while Martin downed Brent Bawel 6-1 in another "B" qualifying game Sunday afternoon. Advancing from the "C" were Laycock, Petryk, Stoughton and Murdoch.
